Anthony Saidy, born on May 16, 1937, in New York, is an American International Master (IM) of chess, a retired physician, and an author. He earned the IM title in 1969 and competed in eight U.S. Chess Championships, achieving a top placement of fourth. In 1960, Saidy won the Canadian Open Chess Championship and was part of the U.S. team that clinched the World Student Team Championship in Leningrad, marking the only U.S. victory in that event. Beyond his playing career, he authored several chess books, including “The World of Chess” (co-authored with Norman Lessing) and “The Battle of Chess Ideas.” Saidy was a mentor and friend to Bobby Fischer, providing him with a place to stay before the 1972 World Chess Championship. He is also the son of playwright Fred Saidy.
