Adele Belcher (1908-1992) was an American chess player. Born Adolphine Octaire Permereur in Antwerp, Belgium, she first came to the United States in 1916. In 1931, she married D. Rivero (from whom she later divorced) in New York. Many may not know that she wasn’t only a U.S. Women’s Champion, but also the first woman to win an open (overall) state championship when she became champion of Vermont in 1954. Adele married again, to Donald Belcher.
