Adolf Anderssen

He won the great international tournaments of 1851 and 1862. Although the title of World Chess Champion did not exist yet, he is generally regarded as having been the world’s leading player from 1851 to 1858 and the leading active player from 1862 to 1866.
After losing matches to Paul Morphy in 1858 and Wilhelm Steinitz in 1866, he became the most successful tournament player in Europe. He won over half the events he entered, including the strong Baden-Baden tournament of 1870.
