Jan Timman is a Dutch grandmaster who was one of the top players in the world from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. He won the Dutch Chess Championship nine times. Because he was seen as the best non-Soviet player during his peak, people called him The Best of the West.
He was a Candidate for the World Chess Championship on several occasions. In 1993, he played Anatoly Karpov for the FIDE World Championship title but lost the match. His highest rated speed chess score is a 2504 in Rapid.
