He began his chess journey at 13 and rapidly ascended the ranks, securing the Cuban Chess Championship titles in 1996 and 1998. After relocating to the U.S., Becerra became a prominent figure in American chess, earning the title of Grandmaster in 1997. He has been a multiple-time Florida State Champion, with his most recent victory in 2021.
