Mary Weiser Bain (1904-1972). She was an American-Ukrainian chess master. She was a challenger in the 1937 and 1952 Women’s World Chess Championships and the first American woman to represent the U.S. in an organized chess competition. She ran a chess shop and a coffee house on 42nd Street in Manhattan.
