About the players

Jan Donner

Jan Donner was a Dutch jurist and politician from the Anti-Revolutionary Party. He served as Minister of Justice between 1926 and 1933. Later, from 1946 to 1961, he was President of the Dutch Supreme Court. He is also known as the father of chess player Jan Hein Donner.

Donner joined the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1941. The state granted him the honorary title of Minister of State in 1971. His son Andre was a jurist and his grandson Piet He became a minister.


Jan Timman

Jan Timman is a Dutch grandmaster who was one of the top players in the world from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. He won the Dutch Chess Championship nine times. Because he was seen as the best non-Soviet player during his peak, people called him The Best of the West.

He was a Candidate for the World Chess Championship on several occasions. In 1993, he played Anatoly Karpov for the FIDE World Championship title but lost the match. His highest rated speed chess score is a 2504 in Rapid.
