Adolf AnderssenKarl Ernst Adolf Anderssen (1818-1879), was a German chess master, considered as leading the world of chess between 1850 and 1860. An important figure in the development of chess problems. He won the great international tournaments of 1851 and 1862. Although the title of World Chess Champion did not exist yet, he is generally regarded as having been the world's leading player from 1851 to 1858 and the leading active player from 1862 to 1866. After losing matches to Paul Morphy in 1858 and Wilhelm Steinitz in 1866, he became the most successful tournament player in Europe. He won over half the events he entered, including the strong Baden-Baden tournament of 1870.

Wilfried Paulsen

Wilfried Paulsen was a German chess master and the elder brother of Louis Paulsen. He was a regular at tournaments in the mid to late 19th century. Paulsen won first place at Cologne 1867 and Düsseldorf 1876. He also took second place behind Lange at Düsseldorf 1863.

His results varied across the following decades. He tied for 3rd-5th at Düsseldorf 1862 and shared 3rd at Aachen 1868. Other placements include 5th at Barmen 1869 and 6th at Krefeld 1871.

Paulsen continued playing into the 1880s. He finished 6th at Braunschweig 1880 and tied for 5-6th at Leipzig 1888. Other outings include 11th at Berlin 1881 and 15th at Nuremberg 1883. He also tied for 16-17th at both Hamburg 1885 and Dresden.
