Lev Polugaevsky

Lev Polugaevsky was a Soviet chess player from Mogilev. FIDE awarded him the International Grandmaster title in 1962. He stayed among the strongest players in the world from the early 1960s until the late 1980s. He often contended for the World Championship but never won the title.

He was also a distinguished author. His work as an opening theorist is still important today.
