Lajos Steiner was a Hungarian-born Australian chess master. He grew up as one of four children to Bernat, a math teacher, and Cecilia Steiner. After studying at the Technical High School in Budapest, he moved to Germany and earned a mechanical engineering diploma from Technikum Mittweida in 1926.
Steiner found success in several tournaments during the 1920s and 1930s. He tied for 4-5th in Vienna in 1923 and finished second in Budapest in 1925, ranking behind Sándor Takács. He won a tournament in Schandau in 1927. That same year, he tied for 2nd-3rd in Kecskemét.
Other results include a second place finish in Bradley Beach in 1929. He won in Buda in 1931.
