About the players
Jose Raul Capablanca was a Cuban chess player born in 1888 at the Castillo del Principe in Havana. He became the third world chess champion and held the title from 1921 to 1927. He was a prodigy.
Capablanca beat Cuban champion Juan Corzo in a match on November 17, 1901, just two days before he turned 13. He later won a match against Frank Marshall in 1909, which got him an invitation to the 1911 San Sebastian tournament. He won that event ahead of players like Akiba Rubinstein and Aron Nimzowitsch. People praised him for his speed of play and exceptional skill in the endgame.
